SJCH MOB and Cancer Center

Project Information

Location: Bakersfield, California

Owner: Adventist Health

Architect: BFGC-IBI Group

Type: Design-Build/OSHPD/LEED Gold

Project Size: 59,500 sq. ft.

The San Joaquin Community Hospital Medical Office Building and Cancer Center Project is a +/-59,500 GSF, four-story, Design-Build, LEED for Healthcare Gold building. This new facility houses public areas, patient registration areas, diagnostic/procedural imaging suites, laboratory,

two linear accelerators, pre-op, post-op, waiting rooms, general practitioner practice suites, and an ambulatory surgery center (ASC) with four operating rooms. The entire facility was constructed to comply OSHPD Level 3 Standards even though only the 4th floor (ASC) was certified.

With one in five cancer patients required to leave Kern County for treatment, the program developed for the SJCH MOB & Cancer Center Project involved the siting of this comprehensive, hospital-based state of the art facility in Bakersfield, CA, a challenge due to its environment of 100+ degree temperatures for eight months out of the year. Another hurdle for the project was interpreting and meeting the stringent design and construction criteria for the USGBC’s new LEED for Healthcare rating system for which it received Gold Certification. Additionally, due to the client’s unanticipated leasing to a future full-floor, long-term tenant, the project was required to increase the elevator size after structural steel fabrication had commenced. Although a challenge, this was completed without jeopardizing the date of the Hospital’s important grand opening event for the community. Due to the success of this project, a second Design-Build MOB facility was awarded to Swinerton Builders.
